It seems that I've mentioned Len Wiseman here more time in the last week than in the whole history of posting movie news but the Underworld director is now up for the reboot/remake of Paul Verhoeven's classic Total Recall, made famous by a great turn by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The remake has been kicking around Hollywood for some time but has passed through many hands in the last ten years or so and right now Wiseman is poised to be hot property amongst the bug studio heads. So naturally he is in talks. Whether or not Wiseman is acting as gun for hire here (and fair play if he is) or whether he was a fan of the original could mean the difference between decent remake and a vastly improved new version.
Kurt Wimmer (Law Abiding Citizen, Equilibrium) is on script duties. His track record is good, not solid but good, and his original work is quite subversive so i expect him to come up with something different to the original.
For those who aren't familiar with the original, it deals with an everyman (Arnie) who has a memory implant go wrong and becomes convinced that he is a secret agent and must travel to Mars to save the planet. Then his perspective of reality switches to reveal possible double and even triple agent ideas. Verhoevens' original was held together by the cast as the sets and props were really shoddy, even though it had a large budget for the time. And many people forget that it was nominated for a slew of awards including winning one Oscar for Special Effects.
Anyway, here is the trailer for the twenty year old original for your nostalgic purposes. And for anyone new to this, yes, trailer were all this long back then.
