Brian Singer and Mathew Vaughn, the producer and director of the upcoming X-Men origins story X-Men: First Class spoke to Total Film about the ideas they have for a potential follow up to First Class. Both seem eager to do at least three films based on the origins of the X-Men and how Professor X and Magneto went from allies to enemies.
Mathew Vaughn said about the first film...
"First Class is similar to Batman Begins, where you have the fun of introducing the characters and getting to know them, but that takes time. But with the second one you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time. That’s the main difference between Begins and The Dark Knight."
And then went on to talk about the time in which a second film would be set...
"1962 is far more grounded in the world of the ’50s. I think it takes about five years for a decade to really start getting its identity, so the fun thing about this for me would be doing [a sequel] in the latter part of the decade, where you’ve got The Stones, The Beatles, Flower Power…"
Brian Singer has also said that the second film might skip the rest of the sixties and move right onto the seventies or even eighties...
"That’s an idea that’s been discussed. How the characters go through time. But only to a point – they can’t age too fast!"
It was also revealed that there might be a potential story arc showing the evolution of Charles Xavier (Professor X)....
"In First Class he uses Cerebro for the first time and maybe it unlocks something in his head – maybe he can’t keep the voices out or something. So in the second movie his journey could be about getting himself out of a mess. And then in the third movie he become… Patrick Stewart!"
With the talent of Singer and Vaughn behind this as well as an eager young line up i can only hope this is as good as it should be.
