In a very surprise move at the recent Disney expo Johnny Depp showed up in full Jack Sparrow regalia and announced that the fourth Pirates of the Carribean movie is going ahead after all and that it starts filming next year for a 2011 release date.
The film will is officially titled Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides. Speculation is that it refers to a pirate book about a pirate named Jack Shandy. The official desription of the book is thus...
" Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father's inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner--and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard's deadly supernatural domination. "
We last saw Jack in a tiny boat with the compass and the centre of Barbossa's map. Both were intent on finding the fountain of youth. Barbossa has the Pearl and Sparrow has the map so will they team up to fight the dreaded Blackbeard? Will Jack find love? And if he does who will it be with?
So far all we know is that Depp is returning as Sparrow and with most of the rest of the cast saying that their pirating days were over but the lure of another pirates will draw more than one back for at least an extended cameo i am willing to bet.
Gone is Gore Verbinski and in steps Rob Marshall to direct. By the sounds of the plot i would say that he will have to be full on tech savvy to handle this film as anyone who watched the dvd extras on the last POTC film will know it's a technical nightmare.
I'm glad Jack's back and a little more glad that the cast will be thinned out because it just got way overcrowded towards the end. No-one got real screen time and even though the ensemble cast worked it was murderous trying to enjoy the film whilst keeping up with the constant backstabbing and switcheroos.
No Keira Knigtley is a shame but at least we don't have to suffer Orlando Blooms Will turnip, or whatever he was called.
How do you feel about more Jack and Barbossa? Would you like to see anyone else come back or new cast members?
Thanks to Firefly for this news!
